The T4 Diagnostic System is offered to the aftermarket in the same
specification it is currently supplied to Land Rover dealers. It is
available directly from Omitec, Inc., the U.S. division of Omitec
Group, who are responsible for developing, manufacturing and
supporting the system. The T4 Diagnostic System: Allows the use of proven TestBook?diagnostic software, while
providing increased functionality and reliability. Allows you to program all Land Rover ECUs to install software
updates or to install a blank ECU to a repaired vehicle. Provides compliance with the latest OBD-II emissions standards. The T4 system comes complete with a laptop, cables, adapters,
printer and rollaround cart (see photo) that houses the printer,
interface electronics, cables and adapters. A lockable cover
protects the laptop from damage or unauthorized removal. CD, paper
and cable storage are provided as well, including two wall-mounted
cabinets to hold cables and adapters. The handheld tester (HHT scan
tool) is also included as part of the complete system. T4 has been
designed for ease of use with both TestBook diagnostic software and
Land Rover’s RAVE technical information software. BackgroundIn the early 1990s Hewlett Packard (HP) developed and built an
electronic tester for Land Rover to test the electronic systems
fitted to current Rover vehicles. The new system tester was named
Testbook and three versions were built during the time HP was
responsible for development. In reality the majority of those sold
to Land Rover dealers were the earlier TestBook 1 and very few
versions of TestBook 2 and TestBook 3 were produced. System
modifications were mainly confined to hardware enhancements. In 1999 HP decided to pull out of the automotive diagnostic market.
Omitec, a leading global diagnostic equipment and software
provider, took over the challenge to develop a replacement for the
aging TestBook system. A new tester was developed that migrated the
existing TestBook software (upgraded to provide compliance with
EOBD and OBDII) into a new system now called T4. T4 was released
for issue to Land Rover dealers in January 2001. The TestBook 1 is
now obsolete, and although new releases of software continue to
function on Testbook, Omitec will not support Testbook 1 repairs
from January 2003. TestBook 2 will be phased out by June 2003 and
TestBook 3 in 2004. Technical Information T4 is supplied with a Pentium-based laptop PC on a Windows platform
connected to a high-specification communications and measurement
interface. This interface also allows for the connection to the
optional Hand Held Tester (HHT). The HHT plugs into the docking station and provides a convenient
device that may also be used independent of the main T4 unit. The
HHT does not contain all the functions of the T4 but may be used in
a mobile capacity or to test other vehicles when the main T4 unit
is otherwise in use. What do I get for my money? The T4 system and software have been developed and enhanced over
many years. The system is capable of testing, configuring and
reprogramming all Land Rover systems from the first engine
management released on Range Rover for the V8 right up to the
latest Range Rover with multiple control systems sold today. It is
the definitive Land Rover diagnostic tool. The hardware kit comprises a high-specification laptop, a specially
designed rollaround cabinet with the communication and measurement
system mounted, a printer for customer reports, and an array of
cables, adaptors and transducers. The software supplied includes
the latest CDs used by Land Rover dealers. There are 3 CDs to
contain the massive amount of information and coverage offered. The
final part of the package is maintenance, a component exchange
scheme with parts sent to the user should a fault occur. A
multi-language, highly experienced technical support team backs up
this support. What else is available? Other options include: Training and installation by qualified technicians Regular updates to the diagnostic software on CD The Handheld Tester kit Maintenance contract (after first year) What benefits does the T4 offer independent aftermarket dealers? For an independent wishing to provide a quality repair and service
facility to customers who own any Land Rover vehicle, the T4 system
is essential. Not only does it provide you with complete coverage;
but also you can be assured that no matter what vehicle comes into
the shop there is service information and diagnostic software
available to it. T4 is the mainstay diagnostic platform just
released to the franchised dealers and is cutting edge with future
